Dad’s Guide To Kids Drinks: Mighties vs The Usual  Suspects – What We’re Really Giving Our Kids

At Good Parenting, we only endorse brands and products we love and actually use ourselves. We may receive commissions on purchases made through links on our site.

Hey fellow parents! As a dad of two energetic kids who seem to have an endless thirst for anything that comes in a colorful package, I’ve been on a mission to figure out what we’re actually putting into our little ones’ bodies.

You know the drill – you’re rushing between soccer practice and grocery shopping, your kid is melting down because they want their favorite juice box, and you’re just trying to keep everyone happy, hydrated and focused. But here’s the wake-up call I got recently: kids are consuming 3x more sugar per day than recommended, and half of that comes from what they’re drinking!

I read this recently and got totally freaked out, but it made sense…

The average kid consumes 81 grams of sugar per day, 46% of that comes from sugary drinks.  The CDC says kids drink 1.5 sugary drinks per day.  Thats equal to 65 pounds of sugar per year, or 30 gallons of sugary drinks per year.  That is enough to fill a standard sized bathtub.  INSANITY! Pure, insanity.

As a dad who wants his kids to have energy for their activities (not sugar crashes), I decided to do some serious detective work. I compared Mighties against all the usual suspects in our pantry: Liquid IV Kids, Honest Juice Boxes, good old Orange Juice, Apple Juice, and those beloved Capri Suns.

What I discovered will probably surprise you as much as it did me.

We compared the top low-sugar kids’ drinks: Liquid IV, Honest Kids, and Mighties

The “Healthy” Drinks That Aren’t So Healthy

Let’s start with what most of us consider the “better” options. I used to pat myself on the back for buying Honest Kids juice boxes instead of regular juice. I mean, it says “organic” right on the package! But when I actually looked at the label, I realized I was getting played by clever marketing.

The Truth About “Organic” Sugar: Here’s something that blew my mind – when you see “organic cane sugar” on a label, your kid’s body processes it exactly the same as regular sugar. The USDA organic stamp doesn’t make sugar any less harmful to their developing metabolisms. It’s still sugar that spikes their blood glucose, leads to energy crashes, and contributes to behavioral issues we’ve all seen after snack time.

Let me break down what I found when I actually compared the numbers:

The Sugar Shock: What’s Really In These Drinks

Capri Sun (1 pouch): 16g sugar

Apple Juice (8 oz): 24g sugar

Orange Juice (8 oz): 21g sugar

Honest Kids Juice Box: 8g sugar

Liquid IV Kids: 6g sugar

Mighties: 0g sugar

Wait, what? Zero grams in Mighties? That got my attention real quick.

But here’s where it gets even more interesting. The recommended daily sugar intake for kids is only 12-25g total (depending on age). So that one glass of “healthy” orange juice we give them at breakfast? That’s already their entire day’s worth of sugar – and we haven’t even gotten to lunch yet.

How do Mighties, Liquid IV for Kids, and Honest Kids compare?

Nutrition + Flavor: Mighties Wins With No Sugar + Vitamins + Hydration + Essential Amino Acids

As I dug deeper into this rabbit hole, I realized we’ve been thinking about kids’ drinks all wrong. We’re so focused on what tastes good and what’s convenient that we’re missing what their growing bodies actually need.

Here’s what really shocked me: Most of these drinks are just flavored sugar water with some electrolytes thrown in. But kids need so much more than just electrolytes, especially when they’re active, growing, and their brains are developing at lightning speed.

What kids actually need for optimal growth and energy:

  • Essential amino acids for muscle development and growth
  • Vitamin D for bone health (something like 80% of kids are deficient!)
  • B vitamins for brain function and energy metabolism
  • Zinc for immune support
  • Real hydration without the sugar crash

Guess which drink was the only one that had ALL of these? Yep, Mighties.

Mighties had the highest nutrient density of the drinks we tested – and zero sugar

The Taste Test: Will Kids Actually Drink It?

Now, I know what you’re thinking – “This sounds great, but will my kid actually drink something with zero sugar?” I had the same concern. My 5-year-daughter Charlie is pretty picky, and my 3-year-old son Jett has been known to stage full protests over drinks that don’t meet her very specific taste requirements.

So I did what any curious dad would do – I set up a blind taste test.

The Results:

  • Capri Sun: Jake’s longtime favorite, Emma loved it too (no surprise there)
  • Apple Juice: Both kids enjoyed it, but Emma said it was “too sweet”
  • Orange Juice: Jake liked it, Emma made a face
  • Honest Kids: “It tastes watery, Dad” – Jake’s exact words
  • Liquid IV Kids: Emma took one sip and asked for water to rinse her mouth
  • Mighties: Both kids finished their glasses and asked if they could have more!

I was honestly shocked. The drink with zero sugar was the one they actually preferred? Charlie said it tasted “not too sweet, not too sour, just right” and Jett didn’t say anything, he just gave a thumbs up and finished the whole glass in one sitting. I’ll take that as a “he likes it”.

Mighties won Max’s taste test

The Dad’s Perspective: Real Talk About Convenience

Let’s be honest – as parents, convenience matters. A lot. I’m not about to recommend something that turns my already chaotic mornings into even more of a circus.

Juice Boxes and Capri Suns: Super convenient for packing, kids can handle them independently, but they’re basically sugar bombs in cute packages. Plus, have you ever tried to open a Capri Sun straw without stabbing yourself or your kid?

Regular Juices: Easy to pour, kids love them, but measuring portions is annoying and they go bad quickly once opened.

Liquid IV Kids: The stick packs are genius for on-the-go, and mixing is easy. But at 6g of sugar per serving, I still felt like I was giving them candy water.

Mighties: Same convenient stick packs as Liquid IV, mixes instantly, and here’s the game-changer, I don’t have to limit how many they have per day. When Charlie gets home from soccer practice dying of thirst, I can let her have two without worrying about her sugar intake or her bouncing off the walls before dinner.

Mighties and Liquid IV both come in convenient individual sticks

However, Mighties proved the best option to replace all our kids sugary drinks throughout the day. Not only was it their favorite taste, but it’s the only brand that’s safe to give kids multiple times in a day. With zero sugar, they were able to replace every sugary drink craving with Mighties. Our primary care doctor even recommended Mighties over Liquid IV, Honest Kids and other juice boxes due to their sugar content.  He said we’d be doing our kids a huge favor for their futures and metabolisms.

The Science Dad in Me: Why This Matters Long-Term

I’ll spare you the full research deep-dive (you’re welcome), but here’s what really convinced me to make the switch:

Metabolic Programming: What our kids eat and drink in childhood literally programs their metabolism for life. High sugar intake during these crucial developmental years sets them up for insulin resistance, obesity, and a whole host of health issues down the road.

Brain Development: Those sugar spikes and crashes aren’t just affecting their mood in the moment – they’re actually impacting their ability to focus, learn, and develop healthy eating patterns.

Taste Preference Formation: Kids who grow up drinking super sweet beverages often struggle to enjoy more naturally flavored foods and drinks as they get older.

This isn’t about being a “perfect parent” or food-shaming anyone. It’s about making informed choices when we can, especially when there are options that taste just as good (or better) without the downsides.

Mighties is Max’s (and our) top pick to replace those sugary drinks
